Why use a template for Bible study?

A template does two things: it removes the blank page problem (you know what to write), and it ensures you move through the full cycle — from reading to reflection to application to prayer. Without structure, most people stop at observation. The template pulls you through to response.

Template 1: SOAP Method

SOAP is the most widely used personal Bible study template — simple enough to do every day, comprehensive enough to produce real insight.

SOAP BIBLE STUDY
Date: _______________ Passage: ___________________
S — Scripture (write out the verse or short passage)
_____________________________________________
_____________________________________________
_____________________________________________
O — Observation (what does it say? who, what, when, where?)
_____________________________________________
_____________________________________________
_____________________________________________
A — Application (what does it mean for my life specifically?)
_____________________________________________
_____________________________________________
_____________________________________________
P — Prayer (respond to God based on what you read)

How to use SOAP effectively

  • Scripture: Write it out by hand or type it slowly — the act of writing slows you down and increases engagement with the text. Don't just copy and paste.
  • Observation: Stay descriptive here — no interpretation yet. "Paul writes this from prison" (observation) vs "Paul is teaching that suffering produces joy" (interpretation, which belongs in Application).
  • Application: Be specific. "Trust God more" is not an application. "When I feel anxious about this week's presentation, I will pray Philippians 4:6 instead of catastrophizing" is an application.
  • Prayer: Let the passage shape the prayer. If the passage is about forgiveness, the prayer should involve confession or gratitude for forgiveness. The prayer closes the loop.

Template 2: Inductive Bible Study

The inductive method goes deeper — it's more rigorous and takes more time, but produces richer understanding. Best for verse-by-verse study or when you want to understand a passage thoroughly.

INDUCTIVE BIBLE STUDY
Date: _______________ Passage: ___________________
OBSERVATION — What does it say?
List facts, people, places, repeated words, commands, contrasts, cause/effect

INTERPRETATION — What does it mean?
Context (who wrote it, to whom, why?), cross-references, what is the author's main point?
_____________________________________________
_____________________________________________
_____________________________________________
APPLICATION — What does it mean for me?
A specific belief to adopt, action to take, or prayer to pray
_____________________________________________
_____________________________________________
CROSS-REFERENCES
_____________________________________________
QUESTIONS (what I still don't understand)

The Rise Bible study notes format

Rise's built-in study notes combine elements of both templates with AI assistance:

  • Passage field: Linked directly to the Bible text in Rise
  • What it says: Observation field with AI prompts to help you notice what you might miss
  • What it means: Interpretation field — Rise's AI can provide historical context, word studies, and cross-references
  • What it means for me: Personal application field
  • Prayer response: Optional prayer field
  • Questions: Questions you want to explore — Rise can help you research them or save them for a pastor or small group

The key advantage of Rise over paper templates: all your notes are searchable, connected to each other through the Bible text, and available to Rise's AI — which can find connections across months of study that you'd never notice manually.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SOAP method for Bible study notes?

SOAP stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer. For each passage: copy or summarize the Scripture, write your Observations (what does it say? what do you notice?), write your Application (what does it mean for my life?), and write a brief Prayer in response. It's one of the most widely used personal Bible study methods because it's simple and covers the full arc from reading to response.

What is the Inductive Bible study method?

Inductive Bible study is a three-step process: Observation (what does it say? — list facts, terms, who/what/when/where), Interpretation (what does it mean? — context, cross-references, authorial intent), and Application (what does it mean for me? — specific, personal, actionable). This is more rigorous than SOAP and works well for verse-by-verse study.

How long should Bible study notes be?

Long enough to capture genuine insight — brief enough that you'll actually do it. For a daily devotional (5-15 minutes), two to five sentences per field is enough. For deep study of a single passage (30-60 minutes), each field might be a paragraph or more. The goal is processing, not volume.

Can I use this template in Rise?

Yes. Rise's Bible study notes feature uses this same structure with built-in fields. The app also adds AI assistance — you can ask Rise questions about the passage, find cross-references, or explore the historical context, all connected to your notes.

What is the best Bible study method for beginners?

SOAP is the most accessible starting point — it's simple, memorable, and covers the full response cycle. Once SOAP feels natural, the inductive method adds depth. Rise's guided study mode walks beginners through the inductive method step by step for any passage.
